FAACT’s Food Allergy Curricula Program for Schools has been updated! FAACT launched its Food Allergy Curricula Program for Schools in May 2015, another program that fulfills our mission to educate, advocate, and raise awareness for all individuals and families affected by food allergies and life-threatening anaphylaxis - which consists of three age-appropriate programs: grades K-3, grades 4-8, and high school. FAACT's Food Allergy Curricula Program for Schools is a program for educators to teach their students about food allergies and anaphylaxis through interactive presentations, lesson plans, and activities. The teacher-designed PowerPoint presentations, lesson plans, and activities in this free curriculum can be used to introduce your students to common food allergens and safety protocols while encouraging empathy for classmates with a food allergy. What to Bring to the Food Challenge Most allergists will welcome at least 1-2 parents/guardians to accompany a child during a food challenge. Confirm if you will need to supply your own food for the challenge or if this will be provided for you. For children it is often helpful to have additional safe foods, which can be used for mixing and to hide the taste of the food being challenged. Examples include apple sauce, yogurt, puddings, chocolate sauce, ketchup and other favorite condiments. Items for activity/entertainment such as books, tablets, games, or other toys are typically welcomed. For adults, feel free to bring laptop and work, if necessary. In case of a reaction that includes vomiting, having a fresh set of clothes for you and your child can also be helpful. You must have your epinephrine in hand for the car ride home in case any delayed symptoms occur. #FAACT Supports California SB 68, also Known as ADDE's Bill SB 68 ADDE is inspired by nine-year-old #foodallergy advocate, Addie Lao, and would ensure that the top 9 #allergens (milk, egg, fish, shellfish, tree nuts, peanut, wheat, soy, and sesame) are labeled on restaurant menus in California to ensure safer dining experiences for individuals with #foodallergies. SB 68 (ADDE) would provide critical transparency, making it easier for consumers to make safe choices and reducing the risk of life-threatening reactions. The Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America is a co-sponsor of SB 68 and garnered the support of 30 state and national organizations and over 500 California medical professionals to support this bill - including FAACT! The bill’s namesake and other co-sponsor, 9-year-old, Addie Lao and her third-grade class, appeared before lawmakers on April 9, 2025, to advocate for the bill. AAFA also attended the Health Committee hearing in Sacramento, CA to testify in favor of the bill. "The EU and UK are farther ahead than the United States when it comes to menu allergen labeling in restaurants, which they have had in place since 2014 labeling for top 14 allergens," states Eleanor Garrow-Holding, FAACT President & CEO. "When I took my adult son with food allergies to Italy and France in 2022, it gave us extra reassurance to have allergens labeled on every restaurant menu we dined in. It made navigating food options much easier, while still speaking to the Chef and sharing our allergen translation cards. FAACT supports food allergy safety for all allergic consumers, and we support ADDE's Bill, SB 68. We, along with the rest of the food allergy community, are grateful for #AAFA taking the lead on such important legislation and for the organizations & medical professionals supporting this bill." FARE & the California Restaurant Association are opposing SB 68. Alpha-gal syndrome (AGS) is a serious, potentially life-threatening allergic condition that can occur after a tick bite. It's named for a molecule, galactose-α-1,3-galactose, that's found in most mammals. Symptoms occur after people eat red meat or are exposed to other products made from mammals. Symptoms range from mild to severe, including anaphylaxis, and are often characterized by a delayed reaction of 2-10 hours. The lone star tick is the species mostly associated with AGS, but other kinds of ticks may be involved.
